For over 45 years, the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) has helped the healthcare community develop, manage, and use safe and effective medical technology. Recognizing that wireless technologies are a critical part of many medical devices, AAMI has been focusing more attention on wireless and delivering resources to help healthcare organizations use wireless more effectively.
In January, AAMI announced that it had formed a wireless task force. Laird Technologies is an active participant on that task force, joined by prominent medical device makers, providers, government agencies, and other organizations. Several members of the task force wrote articles on wireless technologies for the May/June issue of AAMI’s peer-reviewed journal, BI&T (Biomedical Instrumentation & Technology).
More recently, AAMI added a “Wireless Technology” page to its website. The page houses links to articles, a webinar on Wireless Security and Robust Wireless Networks, survey results on the use of wireless technology, best practices, news from the AAMI wireless task force, priority issues from the AAMI 2012 Wireless Workshop, and resources about the FCC and FDA. The AAMI Wireless Technology Hot Topic page is an invaluable resource for healthcare IT professionals looking to improve the functionality of their wireless network and better manage wireless medical devices in hospitals. “Wireless Technology” is the latest “hot topic” on the AAMI website, joining Alarm Systems, Home Healthcare, Infusion Pumps, Interoperability, Medical Device Data Systems (MDDS), and Reprocessing of Reusable Medical Devices.
The online resources are evidence that AAMI takes seriously its mission to be the primary source of consensus and timely information on medical instrumentation technology. The AAMI website provides a wealth of information on the delivery, development, management, use and other aspects of safe and effective medical instrumentation and related technologies.
